Thailand Alleges Cambodia Breached Fresh Ceasefire Deal Amid Border Skirmishes

In a swift escalation of tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border, Thailand has openly accused its Southeast Asian neighbour, Cambodia, of intentionally violating the recently brokered ceasefire agreement intended to halt days of deadly cross-border hostilities. The ceasefire, which came into effect on Monday, was aimed at putting an end to the violent clashes that have reportedly claimed no fewer than 33 lives and forced thousands to flee their homes on both sides of the border.

Thai military officials, in statements released on Tuesday, alleged that Cambodian forces resumed artillery shelling and small arms fire in disputed areas shortly after the truce was declared. According to Bangkok, these fresh acts of aggression suggest a “deliberate breach” of the ceasefire terms and undermine efforts to de-escalate the long-running tensions tied to territorial claims around the ancient Preah Vihear temple zone.

The Thai foreign ministry further stated that it had lodged a formal complaint through diplomatic channels and urged Cambodian authorities to honour the spirit and letter of the ceasefire, which was agreed upon during high-level military talks earlier in the week.

On its part, Cambodia denied initiating any fresh attacks, instead accusing Thai troops of provocation and encroachment. Phnom Penh insisted that its military actions were “in self-defence” and maintained that it remains committed to peaceful resolution through dialogue. Both nations have long disputed ownership of border territories near the UNESCO-listed temple, with previous rounds of conflict dating back more than a decade.

Local reports indicate that the renewed violence has worsened the humanitarian crisis in affected communities, with over 50,000 people reportedly displaced and sheltering in makeshift camps lacking adequate food, water, and medical supplies. Schools and homes near the conflict zone have been abandoned, while regional observers continue to call for international mediation to prevent further escalation.

Despite the growing tension, regional bodies including the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have urged both parties to exercise restraint and recommit to dialogue in the interest of regional peace and stability. The United Nations has also expressed concern over the deteriorating situation, stressing the need for a durable and verifiable ceasefire agreement.
