Former Chelsea defender Thiago Silva has laughed off suggestions that he could act as a spy for Fluminense ahead of their Club World Cup semi final showdown against the Blues in New York.
Silva, now 40, spent four successful years at Stamford Bridge and was a key figure in Chelsea’s Champions League triumph in 2021. Despite leaving for Brazil last summer to rejoin Fluminense, the veteran centre back has remained deeply connected to his old club.
His two sons, Iago and Isago, are still part of Chelsea’s academy system in London, and Silva has made visits to the club’s Cobham training ground in recent months. He also remains in regular contact with many of Chelsea’s first team players.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the high stakes clash, Silva said with a smile, “No, I’m not a spy. I do not know Maresca that well, but I do know a lot of players there. I talk to them practically every week. Some of them are very close to me.”
Although he admitted to offering a few tips to the Fluminense coaching staff, Silva kept things lighthearted and insisted that the real focus was on his current team’s preparation.
“I was in London a little while ago to see my kids, so I went to training. Of course I cannot give too much away but we have prepared for this match. I think that is the most important thing,” he added.
Looking ahead to the game, Silva spoke with confidence about Fluminense’s chances, praising the club’s passionate fan base and team spirit.
“Whoever is on the other side, I think Fluminense have a special crowd, a special aura. I hope that can work tomorrow too,” he said.
The semi final marks a special moment for Silva, who will be facing familiar faces in a match that could send either team to the Club World Cup final.
