Three Arrested Over Killing of Liberty Radio Staff in Abuja After Year-Long Police Hunt

Abuja, Nigeria –  August 11,2025

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested three suspects in connection with the murder of Azubuko Nwakama, a staff member of Liberty Radio, who was attacked, robbed, and fatally stabbed on June 14, 2024, at Panteka Market, Mpape, Abuja.

According to the Command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, the arrests follow a year-long investigation by detectives from the Mpape Division. A breakthrough came on August 2, 2025, when the victim’s stolen Redmi 13C mobile phone was switched on and tracked to a suspect in Abuja.

The first suspect, identified as 32-year-old Mutari Lawal from Kano State, was apprehended and confessed to the crime, naming two accomplices: 22-year-old Dan’Asabe Ibrahim from Zamfara State and 18-year-old Danjuma Ibrahim, of no fixed address in Mpape. Police allege the trio robbed and stabbed Nwakama before fleeing with his belongings.

FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Ajao Adewale, commended the officers for their perseverance, warning that “the long arm of the law is patient, persistent, and resolute,” and urging criminals in the territory to “repent or relocate.”

Police say the suspects remain in custody as investigations continue ahead of prosecution.
