July 31, 2025 | Abuja — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of the Governing Council and principal officers for the newly established Federal University of Technology located in Ogoniland, Rivers State, marking a critical step in the institution’s operational takeoff.
According to a statement from the Presidency on Wednesday, the appointments form part of Tinubu’s administration’s efforts to accelerate access to quality higher education in underserved regions and further advance the cleanup and redevelopment agenda in Ogoniland.
The governing council, composed of experienced educationists, administrators, and community representatives, has been tasked with overseeing the university’s strategic direction, policy implementation, and long-term development goals. The principal officers appointed include the Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, Bursar, and Librarian, all selected based on merit, expertise, and alignment with the university’s mandate of technology-driven education and research.
The Federal University of Technology, Ogoniland, was created to not only serve as a hub for academic excellence but also as a catalyst for sustainable development in the Niger Delta. The region, long affected by environmental degradation due to oil exploration, is expected to benefit from the university’s focus on innovation, renewable energy, environmental science, and industrial technology.
President Tinubu emphasized that the appointments were guided by a commitment to equity, transparency, and capacity building. He charged the new officials to ensure that the university evolves into a world-class institution that empowers local talent and drives socio-economic transformation.
The move has been widely welcomed by stakeholders in the region, including youth leaders, traditional rulers, and environmental advocacy
