President Bola Tinubu has appointed Professor Olusegun Ojo as the inaugural Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the Federal University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Akure, Ondo State. His appointment, which takes effect from March 5, 2025, was announced alongside those of five other CMDs.
Akure had been the only state capital in Nigeria without a tertiary hospital until now. Tinubu, in a statement issued on Friday by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed that the appointments are for a four-year tenure, effective from the date of assumption of office.
While congratulating the newly appointed and reappointed CMDs, the President urged them to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, accountability, and service delivery in their respective institutions.
During the presentation of the appointment letter in Abuja on Thursday, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Pate, also extended his congratulations to Ojo. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that the new teaching hospital aligns with the objectives of the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He further tasked Ojo with addressing the training needs of the College of Health Sciences at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, where he previously served as Provost.
Professor Ojo, a distinguished pathologist, has been a faculty member at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) College of Health Sciences, Ile-Ife, since 2001. He has also served as a Consultant Histopathologist at the affiliated Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital since 1990.
He earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, in 1983, followed by Postgraduate Residency Training in Pathology. He achieved Fellowship of the Nigerian Postgraduate Medical College in Anatomical Pathology in 1989 and later obtained a Doctor of Medicine degree in 2021.
With a research and clinical focus on gastroenterology—particularly liver diseases and digestive tract disorders—Professor Ojo has played a key role in establishing a collaborative network of researchers in Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa through the Gastroenterological Society of Sub-Saharan Africa.
He has also served as the President of the Society for Gastroenterology in Nigeria and the Africa Middle East Association of Gastroenterology, a branch of the World Gastroenterology Organization.
Currently the Chairman of the Faculty of Pathology at the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, Ojo has an extensive record of publications in international journals on Gastroenterology and Anatomical Pathology.
Additionally, he was the founding Editor-in-Chief of Annals of Tropical Pathology, Africa’s leading journal in the field of pathology. He is also the author of Essential Pathology for Clinical Students in the Tropics, a widely used undergraduate textbook on pathology.
