Tinubu Assures Brazilian Leader of Reforms to Boost Agriculture and Food Security in Nigeria

July 6, 2025 | Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has pledged that his administration is actively dismantling obstacles hindering agricultural and food production in Nigeria, as part of his Renewed Hope Agenda to ensure national food security and economic stability.

The President made this known during a bilateral discussion with his Brazilian counterpart, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, on the sidelines of the 17th BRICS Summit currently ongoing in Rio de Janeiro.

According to a statement released by the Presidential Media Team, President Tinubu emphasized Nigeria’s readiness to partner with Brazil in modernizing its agriculture sector and enhancing food sufficiency through technology transfer, research collaborations, and investments in agricultural infrastructure.

“We are eliminating every bottleneck stifling food production and agricultural development in Nigeria,” Tinubu stated. “Our goal is to ensure that Nigeria becomes not just self-sufficient in food production but also a significant exporter of agricultural produce.”

He added that the partnership with Brazil, renowned for its advances in mechanized farming, will be key to Nigeria’s agricultural transformation, particularly in areas such as irrigation, crop processing, and agri-business financing.

President Lula da Silva welcomed the proposal, expressing Brazil’s willingness to support Nigeria through technical cooperation, agro-industrial exchange, and shared innovation.

The meeting marks a strategic move by Nigeria to strengthen South-South cooperation and draw lessons from Brazil’s agricultural success story, as the West African nation works to reposition its economy and improve livelihoods through sustainable food production systems.
