Tinubu Brokers Fresh Peace Talks Among Rivers Political Leaders

Abuja, Nigeria – June 27, 2025

In a renewed effort to restore lasting peace in Rivers State, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu once again brought together key political actors from the oil-rich state on Thursday night at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The high-level meeting featured the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike; Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara; and Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Martins Chike Amaewhule, all central figures in the protracted political crisis that has gripped the state in recent months.

President Tinubu, who had previously facilitated a peace accord in December 2023, convened this latest round of talks three months after declaring a political emergency in Rivers on March 18, 2025, following worsening tensions and parallel loyalties in the state’s political structure.

Sources at the meeting confirmed that the discussions focused on strengthening governance, restoring unity, and ensuring institutional stability within Rivers State. The President reportedly emphasized the need for mature dialogue, political tolerance, and respect for democratic processes as the path forward.

“Mr. President has once again demonstrated that the unity and stability of Nigeria come first. His intervention is not just timely but also a reassurance of his commitment to national peace,” a source close to the talks disclosed.

All parties reportedly expressed willingness to work towards de-escalation and compliance with the earlier peace terms, though details of any new agreements reached remain under wraps.

President Tinubu’s hands-on involvement in resolving the Rivers crisis has been widely viewed as a show of leadership and political maturity. Stakeholders across the country are now hopeful that Thursday’s engagement will mark a turning point in the state’s lingering impasse.
