Abuja, Nigeria – July, 2025 — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has stated that his administration’s reforms and intensified surveillance mechanisms have made the smuggling of petroleum products increasingly unattractive across Nigeria’s borders.
Speaking during a high-level policy dialogue on energy and economic security in Abuja, President Tinubu said the government’s decisive actions have significantly curbed illicit activities in the oil and gas sector.
“We have made smuggling of oil unattractive. With the removal of fuel subsidies, tightening of border controls, and improved intelligence sharing among security agencies, the incentive for this economic sabotage has drastically reduced,” Tinubu asserted.
The President emphasized that these efforts were in line with his Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at sanitizing the energy sector, strengthening national revenue, and restoring investor confidence.
He further explained that investments in digital tracking systems and collaborations with neighboring countries have enhanced real-time monitoring of petroleum product movement, making it more difficult for smugglers to operate undetected.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) and the Nigerian Customs Service have corroborated the President’s claims, noting a marked drop in fuel smuggling incidents in recent months.
President Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to sustaining energy reforms that will not only block leakages but also expand domestic refining capacity and ensure stable fuel availability for Nigerians.
