President Bola Tinubu has reiterated his commitment to modernizing and empowering Nigeria’s Police Force with advanced technology and tools to enhance its capacity to combat crime across the nation. He emphasized the need for a well-trained, motivated, and adequately equipped force to stay steps ahead of those threatening the country’s peace, security, and prosperity.
Speaking as Special Guest of Honour at the inaugural National Police Day celebration in Abuja, Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, outlined his administration’s strategy to improve policing in Nigeria. The event marked the culmination of the 2025 Police Week activities.
A key highlight of the occasion was the official declaration of April 7 as National Police Day, a day set aside annually to honor the force’s fallen heroes and recognize the exceptional service of its personnel. This initiative is in line with President Tinubu’s vision of fostering an enduring partnership with the Nigeria Police Force and recognizing their invaluable contributions to national security.
In a statement read on his behalf by Shettima’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communication, Stanley Nkwocha, President Tinubu expressed his administration’s dedication to improving the welfare of the police. “A secure Nigeria is essential for our collective prosperity, and this vision starts with ensuring that our police force is equipped, trained, and motivated,” Tinubu said.
The president further assured that his government would take decisive steps to enhance the police force, providing modern tools and technology to strengthen their operations. He also promised improved conditions for police officers, including better housing, healthcare, and quality education for their families. “These promises will begin to materialize immediately,” Tinubu added, underlining his commitment to ensuring police personnel are adequately remunerated, given the risks they face daily.
Tinubu also emphasized that the federal government would address internal security challenges such as banditry, insurgency, and kidnapping, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to ensuring the safety of lives and property across Nigeria.
Reflecting on the importance of the police in safeguarding democracy and citizens’ safety, President Tinubu highlighted the essential role the force plays as the first line of defense against crime. “Your role is indispensable, and your contributions are immeasurable,” he stated, noting that National Police Day was instituted to honor their service and sacrifice.
In his speech, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, reiterated the significance of National Police Day, stressing that it not only commemorates the establishment of the force but also pays tribute to the fallen heroes and highlights the dedication of officers serving in various operational theaters. He also outlined ongoing reforms aimed at building a force that is trustworthy, professional, and committed to national development through enhanced security.
The event was marked by various activities, including a guard inspection by Vice President Shettima, a procession of tactical units, and a silent drill display by the police force. The ceremony was attended by notable figures such as the Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRazaq Abdulrahman; the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume; National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu; and members of the National Assembly, among others.
With the establishment of National Police Day and the ongoing efforts to modernize the force, President Tinubu’s administration is committed to creating a police force that Nigerians can trust, and which will be pivotal in securing the future of the country.
