Tinubu Reaffirms Commitment to Democratic Ideals, Economic Reforms at National Assembly’s Democracy Day Session

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, delivered a compelling address to a joint session of Nigeria’s National Assembly on June 12, 2025, commemorating the nation’s 26th Democracy Day. His speech underscored the enduring spirit of Nigeria’s democratic journey, paid tribute to its heroes, and outlined the administration’s commitment to economic reforms and national unity.

Standing before the lawmakers, President Tinubu expressed profound honor and a deep sense of responsibility. He reflected on the nation’s transformation since 1999, when democracy emerged from the shadows of military rule to become the cornerstone of governance. Acknowledging the progress made, he emphasized that the journey is ongoing and requires collective effort.

The President paid homage to the heroes of Nigeria’s democratic struggle, particularly Chief MKO Abiola, whose 1993 presidential election victory was annulled. He also honored individuals like Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, Pa Alfred Rewane, General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, and Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu, who made significant sacrifices for the restoration of democracy. Additionally, he recognized the contributions of journalists and media houses such as The Guardian, The Punch, and TELL Magazine, who stood firm against military repression to uphold free speech and civil liberties.

Addressing concerns about the nation’s political landscape, President Tinubu firmly rejected the notion of establishing a one-party state. He assured the nation that such an idea was neither his vision nor in the best interest of Nigeria. He welcomed new members to the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Delta and Akwa Ibom States, emphasizing that political diversity should be embraced, and internal party reforms should be prioritized over fear of opposition defections.

Turning to economic matters, the President highlighted the administration’s efforts to reform the nation’s economy. He noted that while these reforms had led to some hardships, they were necessary to establish a more robust and equitable economic foundation. He pointed to positive indicators such as a 3.4% GDP growth in 2024, a fivefold increase in foreign reserves, and a stabilized Naira exchange rate as evidence of progress. The administration also introduced initiatives like the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP), which has provided affordable credit to over 100,000 Nigerians, including civil servants. Plans were announced to expand this program to empower an additional 400,000 young Nigerians, including youth corps members, with consumer credit.

In the realm of infrastructure, President Tinubu announced an ambitious project to lay fiber optic cables across the nation, aiming to bridge the digital divide and enhance connectivity. This initiative is expected to revolutionize business operations, education, and communication, positioning Nigeria to compete effectively in the global digital economy.

The President also addressed the issue of minimum wage, acknowledging the concerns of Nigerian workers. He committed to submitting an executive bill to the National Assembly to enshrine the agreed-upon minimum wage into law, ensuring that it remains effective for the next five years or more.

In his closing remarks, President Tinubu reiterated the importance of democracy as a living, breathing reality that requires constant nurturing. He called on all Nigerians to recommit to the values of inclusivity, accountability, and transparency, ensuring that the nation’s democratic journey continues to flourish for generations to come. He emphasized that the future of Nigeria lies in the collective efforts of its citizens, urging them to embrace the moment with renewed purpose and dedication.

President Tinubu’s address on Democracy Day 2025 served as both a reflection on Nigeria’s democratic achievements and a call to action for continued progress. His speech highlighted the nation’s resilience, the sacrifices of its people, and the administration’s commitment to fostering a more inclusive and prosperous future.
