Tinubu Renames University of Maiduguri in Honour of Late President Buhari

Abuja, July 18, 2025 — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially renamed the University of Maiduguri as Muhammadu Buhari University Maiduguri in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The announcement was made as part of ongoing national tributes to immortalize the former leader who passed away recently in London and was laid to rest in his hometown, Daura, Katsina State.

President Tinubu said the renaming of the prestigious northeastern university is a significant gesture to recognise Buhari’s “sacrificial leadership, legacy of integrity, and enduring contributions to national unity and security, particularly in the North-East region.”

The University of Maiduguri, established in 1975, has been a symbol of resilience, continuing to operate despite years of insurgency in the region. The decision to rename it after Buhari is seen as a tribute to his administration’s efforts to combat terrorism and stabilise the area.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, a former governor of Borno State and alumnus of the university, described the move as “fitting and timely,” noting that the institution played a critical role in the intellectual and cultural development of northern Nigeria.

The Federal Ministry of Education and relevant agencies are expected to commence the formal transition to Muhammadu Buhari University Maiduguri in the coming weeks.

The renaming follows a series of national honours and prayers held in memory of the late president, further underscoring his impact on the nation.
