Tinubu, Saint Lucia’s Prime Minister Pierre Pledge to Establish Formal Diplomatic Ties

Vieux Fort, Saint Lucia – June 30, 2025

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria and Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre of Saint Lucia have jointly expressed strong commitment to establishing formal diplomatic relations between their two countries.

This declaration was made during President Tinubu’s official state visit to the Caribbean nation, the first by a Nigerian leader, aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation, cultural ties, and economic engagement between Nigeria and Saint Lucia.

Speaking during a high-level meeting in Vieux Fort, both leaders emphasized the need for structured diplomatic frameworks that reflect shared ancestry, mutual respect, and common development goals.

President Tinubu noted that the visit signifies Nigeria’s readiness to expand its reach across the Caribbean in line with the African Union’s Sixth Region policy, which recognizes the African diaspora as a key development partner.

“This visit is about more than diplomacy, it’s about reuniting with our extended African family and building bridges of cooperation for mutual prosperity,” Tinubu said.

Prime Minister Pierre welcomed the initiative, saying Saint Lucia looks forward to deepening ties with Nigeria in the areas of trade, education, cultural exchange, and people-to-people relations.

“We share not only a heritage but also a future that must be built through collaboration and solidarity,” Pierre affirmed.

The leaders agreed to fast-track processes for the exchange of diplomatic missions, initiate technical cooperation agreements, and promote economic partnerships that benefit both nations.

This commitment also sets the stage for broader Africa–Caribbean cooperation, with Nigeria positioning itself as a gateway to deepening ties between the African continent and the Caribbean region.
