President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of members to the Governing Council and Board of Trustees of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP), a critical initiative under the Federal Ministry of Environment aimed at addressing oil spill contamination and restoring degraded communities in the Niger Delta region.
The newly constituted bodies will oversee the strategic direction and accountability framework for the environmental cleanup programme, ensuring efficient use of resources and timely execution of remediation projects.
The Governing Council, chaired by the Minister of Environment, will be responsible for policy formulation, project monitoring, and inter-agency coordination, while the Board of Trustees will manage the project’s financial resources, including funds allocated by the Federal Government, international partners, and oil companies.
According to the Presidency, the appointments reflect the administration’s commitment to environmental justice, sustainable development, and community engagement in the oil-producing areas. President Tinubu urged the appointees to work diligently to restore polluted lands, safeguard public health, and promote economic recovery in affected communities.
HYPREP, established in line with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) recommendations, continues to serve as the main vehicle for implementing large-scale environmental restoration in Ogoniland and other impacted areas of the Niger Delta.
