Tinubu unveils upgraded Abuja water network to boost access across FCT

Abuja, June 16, 2025 — President Bola Tinubu has inaugurated key phases of the Greater Abuja Water Supply Network, marking a major milestone in his administration’s infrastructure agenda. Speaking at the commissioning event, the President described the initiative as both a technical and moral achievement, one that ensures safe, sustainable water reaches all districts within the Federal Capital Territory .

The project initially awarded in 2017 at approximately US $470 million under a public–private financing framework encompassed Loops 1, 2, 5, and 6. Funding came from a tripartite partnership: 85% financed by the Chinese government, and the remaining 15% provided collectively by the Federal Government and FCT Administration .

At the event, President Tinubu led a moment of silence for victims of recent violence in Benue State, expressing solidarity and assuring he would visit the state in solidarity on Wednesday . He lauded the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, and key partners including the Chinese government and CGC Nigeria Limited for delivering infrastructure that serves as the backbone for healthier families, stronger communities, and economic growth .

FCTA officials confirmed that Loops 3 and 4 were already in operation, and the newly commissioned loops will significantly boost water supply capacity from 240,000 m³/day to 720,000 m³/day—across approximately 50 districts and estates .

The Minister of State for the FCT reiterated that procurement efforts are underway to extend potable water to satellite towns like Bwari, Kubwa, Karu, and Kuje, with commissioning expected by Tinubu’s third anniversary next year .

By delivering this water network, the President’s team hopes to set a lasting precedent of equitable development ensuring “no part of Abuja is left behind” in public infrastructure access .
