Lagos, Nigeria – June 12, 2025
The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his enduring legacy and contributions to Nigeria’s democratic development, urging citizens to stay engaged in governance and electoral processes.
Speaking at a Democracy Day event held at the Lagos Assembly complex, Obasa described Tinubu as “a pillar of modern democracy in Nigeria,” citing his political foresight, leadership in Lagos State, and role in building enduring democratic institutions as reasons for celebration.
“President Tinubu’s legacy is deeply etched in Nigeria’s political history. From his time as governor of Lagos to his presidency, he has consistently championed democratic values and good governance. Today, we do not just mark Democracy Day — we celebrate the achievements of a true democrat,” Obasa said.
The Speaker used the occasion to rally voters, especially youths, to exercise their civic responsibility by actively participating in elections and demanding accountability from leaders at all levels. He emphasized the importance of strengthening democracy through peaceful engagement and political participation.
“Democracy thrives when the people’s voice is heard. I call on all Lagosians to take ownership of our democracy, remain politically conscious, and never let apathy derail the progress we’ve made,” he added.
Obasa also paid tribute to Chief MKO Abiola, describing June 12 as a “symbol of courage and the people’s unyielding quest for justice and fair governance.”
The event, attended by lawmakers, political leaders, civil society representatives, and community stakeholders, featured a lecture on democratic sustainability, as well as cultural performances celebrating Nigeria’s diversity.
Lagos remains one of the strongholds of the All Progressives Congress (APC), with Tinubu’s political structure deeply rooted in the state’s governance framework.
