Tinubu’s Reforms Ignite Renewed Hope for Nigeria’s Livestock Sector — Minister

ABUJA — Nigeria’s Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, has declared that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is ushering in a new era of growth and reform for the country’s livestock sector, describing it as a “renewed hope” for farmers, investors, and rural communities.

The minister made the remark on Monday during the opening session of a high-level stakeholders’ engagement on the implementation of the National Livestock Transformation Plan (NLTP), held in Abuja. The event brought together policy makers, development partners, herders’ associations, private sector actors, and traditional leaders to chart a sustainable path forward for livestock production in Nigeria.

According to Abdullahi, the livestock industry has for decades been hampered by neglect, insecurity, outdated practices, and conflict between farmers and herders. He said the Tinubu administration is determined to reverse the trend through targeted investments, institutional reforms, and improved coordination among federal and state actors.

“There is renewed hope for the livestock sector under President Tinubu. His administration understands that livestock is not just a cultural heritage — it is a strategic economic resource. Through bold reforms, we are unlocking its full potential,” the minister stated.

He revealed that the Federal Government is working to reposition the sector through infrastructure development, disease control, improved access to grazing lands, and value chain enhancement in dairy, meat, and leather production.

Stakeholders at the event welcomed the renewed focus, particularly the plan to mainstream ranching systems and establish livestock corridors to curb clashes and encourage commercial farming.

The renewed efforts align with the Tinubu administration’s broader economic diversification agenda, which aims to boost food security, create rural jobs, and attract private capital into agriculture and agribusiness.

The National Livestock Transformation Plan, initially conceived during the previous administration, is now being reviewed and realigned with the current government’s “Renewed Hope Agenda,” with emphasis on peacebuilding, economic viability, and modern pastoralism.
