Media personality Toke Makinwa has encouraged women to stand firm in their relationship expectations, emphasizing that seeking financial support from a partner is not something to feel guilty about.
Speaking on the latest episode of her podcast, Toke Moments, Makinwa urged women not to compromise their standards due to societal pressure. She stressed that everyone has the right to pursue what they desire in a relationship without fear of judgment.
“You don’t need to lower your standards. There are over a billion people in this world. You can find someone who meets your expectations. Stop letting society dictate for you,” she stated.
Addressing critics who label women as materialistic for valuing financial stability in a partner, Makinwa argued that such women should not be shamed. Instead, she encouraged them to seek partners who align with their values.
“If you say, ‘Oh, this girl is a money-hungry b*tch. All she wants is a man to pay her bills.’ If you can’t pay her bills, leave. There’s another guy who is willing to,” she added.
She also cautioned against online debates that criticize people’s relationship preferences, noting that such judgments often reflect the insecurities of the critic rather than the person being judged.
“I feel like we make things harder than they are by arguing online. If someone doesn’t meet your standards, there’s no need to criticize them—it’s actually a reflection of you, not them,” she said.
Her remarks have sparked mixed reactions, with some applauding her stance on personal choices in relationships, while others argue that financial dependence should not be a priority in modern partnerships.
