Tragedy in India: What We Know About the Air India Crash So Far

June 13, 2025

India is mourning the loss of over 70 lives after a tragic Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad on Wednesday, June 12. Flight AI‑171, which was bound for London, crashed shortly after takeoff, sending shockwaves across the global aviation community.

According to preliminary reports, the aircraft developed serious technical difficulties shortly after liftoff. Eyewitnesses reported hearing loud engine noises followed by silence, before the plane plummeted and exploded into flames near the outskirts of the city.

The aircraft had 178 passengers and crew on board. At least 73 fatalities have been confirmed so far, with several others injured and receiving treatment in nearby hospitals.

India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), with help from U.S. aviation experts, has recovered at least one black box (flight data recorder). Investigators are now analyzing the crucial data to determine what went wrong.

While the exact cause is yet to be confirmed, early signs point to a possible dual engine failure or loss of thrust, which may have occurred seconds after takeoff. Other potential causes being examined include:

• Bird strike

• Fuel-related issues

• Flap or landing gear malfunction

• Cockpit system failure

An aircraft engineer who reviewed public footage and available details believes the incident was likely triggered by a catastrophic loss of engine power. However, officials caution that a full investigation will take months.

The AAIB has emphasized that the investigation is still in its early stages. A final report could take up to a year to complete, as experts analyze flight data, engine components, and pilot communications.

The crash has sparked global discussions about aviation safety in developing countries and the growing concern over aging aircraft fleets. It also hits close to home for many Nigerian families with loved ones traveling abroad for work, study, or migration.

As more facts emerge, we will continue to monitor and share verified updates to keep our readers informed.
