A grim scene unfolded in Niger State as a mining pit collapsed, claiming two lives and leaving a community reeling from the tragedy. The incident occurred at an illegal mining site in Galkogo village, Shiroro Local Government Area, following heavy rainfall that weakened the soil structure. According to Hussaini Ibrahim, spokesperson for the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), rescue operations commenced immediately after the collapse. Six miners were pulled out alive but sustained severe injuries. Despite these efforts, two individuals succumbed to the disaster, underscoring the perilous conditions under which miners operate. Ibrahim noted that rescue efforts are being hampered by the depth of the pit and insecurity in the area.
The mining site, reportedly 400 meters deep, had attracted scores of laborers seeking fortune in gold extraction. However, poor safety standards and the absence of proper equipment have made such sites ticking time bombs for disasters. Witnesses and victims’ families allege that mining companies often prioritize cheap labor over machinery, exacerbating risks for workers. This negligence has led to recurring tragedies, with similar incidents reported in recent years.
Niger State is rich in mineral resources but plagued by insecurity and unregulated mining activities. Nigeria’s Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, has dispatched officials from the Mines Inspectorate to investigate the causes of this latest collapse and ensure measures are put in place to prevent future occurrences. Alake assured Nigerians that safety regulations would be strengthened to protect lives and livelihoods in mining communities.
