Taraba, Nigeria | July 18, 2025 —
Nigerian military forces have thwarted a planned terrorist attack on several communities in Taraba State, arresting two suspected insurgents in the process.
According to credible security sources, the operation was carried out following actionable intelligence about the movement of a suspected terrorist cell targeting villages in the Lau and Ardo-Kola local government areas. Troops from Operation Whirl Stroke swiftly mobilised and intercepted the assailants before they could execute their plot.
Military spokesperson, Major Peter Akwashiki, confirmed the arrest of two suspects who were allegedly scouting vulnerable locations for coordinated attacks. He said weapons and communication gadgets were recovered during the raid, which took place in the early hours of Wednesday.
“This successful operation was made possible through timely intelligence and collaboration between security forces and local vigilantes. The two individuals in custody are undergoing interrogation and have provided leads that may result in further arrests,” Major Akwashiki stated.
He noted that the military remains vigilant and committed to protecting residents in the region, which has seen intermittent attacks from bandits and terrorist groups in recent months.
Local residents expressed relief and commended the army’s swift response, noting that previous attacks had displaced several families and left scores injured.
Security has since been reinforced in the area, and surveillance operations are ongoing to root out any additional threats. The government is urging residents to remain calm and cooperate with security personnel in ensuring lasting peace across the state.
