Troops Neutralize Dozens of Terrorists, Rescue 146 Abductees in Northern Nigeria

Troops of the Nigerian Armed Forces have recorded a significant breakthrough in the ongoing war against terrorism and banditry, rescuing 146 abducted persons and neutralizing several terrorists during recent operations across the northern region of the country.

The coordinated operations, which spanned across key flashpoints in Zamfara, Sokoto, and Borno States, were aimed at dismantling terrorist hideouts and rescuing victims held in captivity. According to military authorities, the operations were executed with precision, leading to the recovery of a large number of civilians and the elimination of scores of armed insurgents.

In a statement issued over the weekend, military sources confirmed that the rescued victims included women, children, and elderly persons who had been held hostage for varying lengths of time. The rescued individuals have since been handed over to relevant agencies for medical attention, psychological support, and eventual reunification with their families.

Security analysts have described the operations as one of the most successful in recent months, especially given the volatile security situation in many parts of the North. The North-West and North-East zones have, in recent years, been hotspots for terrorist activities, including mass abductions, killings, and displacement of communities.

The latest rescue operation is part of the Nigerian military’s broader strategy to degrade terrorist capacity, rescue civilians in captivity, and restore peace to restive communities. In September 2024, the Defence Headquarters revealed that troops had killed 159 terrorists, arrested 174 suspects, and rescued 188 abductees in similar operations across the country. Over 150 assorted weapons and more than 12,000 rounds of ammunition were also recovered in the process.

Speaking on the success of the recent mission, a senior military official reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ commitment to protecting civilians and uprooting terror networks. “We remain resolute in our mission to rid Nigeria of the scourge of terrorism and banditry. These successful operations are proof that we are making steady progress, and we will not relent,” the official said.

The Defence Headquarters also called on citizens to support the military with timely and credible intelligence to aid ongoing operations. The public was urged to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies working tirelessly to ensure safety in all parts of the country.

The recent rescue of 146 abductees comes at a time when many Nigerians continue to express concerns over rising insecurity, particularly in rural and hard-to-reach areas. However, the success of the military in this instance is being seen as a morale boost and a sign that the tide may gradually be turning in the battle against criminal elements threatening national peace and security.
