Trump Demands New U.S. Census Amid Intensifying Redistricting Battles

Washington, D.C., USA | August 8, 2025
U.S. President Donald Trump has called for a new national census, citing growing concerns over what he describes as “deeply flawed” population data that is fuelling contentious redistricting battles across multiple states.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Trump claimed that the 2020 census was “inaccurate, outdated, and politically compromised,” and urged the Biden administration to initiate a fresh count to ensure fair representation in congressional districts ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

“The American people deserve honest numbers—not manipulated data that benefits one political party,” Trump said. “It’s time to fix the fraud and start over with a new, transparent census.”

The renewed call comes as legal fights over congressional and legislative redistricting escalate in key battleground states such as Texas, Georgia, North Carolina, and Wisconsin. In many of these cases, Republican-led legislatures have been challenged over maps alleged to dilute minority voting strength or give their party disproportionate advantages.

Democrats and civil rights groups have slammed Trump’s demand, arguing that it is a politically motivated attempt to undermine democratic institutions. Experts also say a new census would be costly, time-consuming, and nearly impossible to implement in the short term without congressional approval.

The U.S. Census Bureau has defended the integrity of the 2020 count, acknowledging challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic but insisting that robust quality checks were conducted.

Trump’s statement is the latest move in an ongoing political and legal tug-of-war over redistricting, one that could reshape the balance of power in Congress for years to come. The Biden administration has not responded publicly to the demand, though officials have previously dismissed calls for a new census as “unnecessary and unconstitutional.”
