U.S. Embassy Revokes Visas of Nigerians, Citing ‘New Information’

September 1, 2025 – The United States Embassy in Nigeria has begun revoking valid visas of Nigerian citizens, invoking “new information” under its immigration regulations, but without offering specific explanations to those affected.

Reports indicate that professionals, entrepreneurs, and frequent travellers are among those whose visas were abruptly withdrawn. A top government official scheduled to deliver an international address was also reportedly affected, raising concerns about the potential diplomatic and economic fallout.

The sudden revocations have left many stranded, with disrupted travel plans and mounting financial costs from cancelled flights, hotel bookings, and stalled business engagements.

Although the U.S. has occasionally exercised its authority to revoke visas under security or policy grounds, the scale and timing of this development have sparked anxiety among Nigerians who rely on frequent travel for work, education, and family commitments.

As of press time, neither the U.S. Embassy nor Nigerian authorities have provided further clarification. Analysts say the move could strain bilateral relations unless more transparency is offered regarding the underlying reasons.
