Abuja, Nigeria – In a significant show of support for peace and security on the African continent, the United Bank for Africa (UBA) has donated the sum of $500,000 to the African Union (AU) Peace Fund. The financial commitment was announced on Monday, underscoring the pan-African bank’s dedication to fostering long-term stability and sustainable development across Africa.
The donation was made as part of UBA’s broader corporate social responsibility agenda and its vision of promoting a safer and more prosperous Africa. The Peace Fund, an AU-led initiative, is instrumental in supporting conflict prevention, crisis management, and peacebuilding efforts across member states.
UBA’s Group Chairman, Tony O. Elumelu, reaffirmed the bank’s unwavering commitment to Africa’s progress, describing peace and security as foundational pillars for economic growth and prosperity. He emphasized that the private sector has a critical role to play in complementing the efforts of governments and regional institutions to secure lasting peace on the continent.
“We believe that a peaceful Africa is a thriving Africa,” Elumelu stated. “This contribution is part of our belief in African solutions to African challenges. By supporting the AU Peace Fund, we are investing in the future of our children and the stability of our nations.”
The African Union welcomed the donation as a timely intervention and called on more African businesses to emulate UBA’s leadership in contributing to the continent’s collective security architecture.
The AU Peace Fund was established as part of the AU’s goal to achieve self-financing for peace operations and reduce reliance on foreign aid. It aims to mobilize $400 million to support African-led peace missions and conflict resolution strategies.
With this latest donation, UBA has positioned itself as not only a financial leader on the continent but also a key stakeholder in the pursuit of a peaceful, united, and economically empowered Africa.
