Nicholas Ukachukwu has been officially declared the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the 2025 governorship election in Anambra State. Ukachukwu’s victory in the party’s primary, which concluded on Sunday, was overwhelming, securing 1,455 votes. This outcome was announced by Senator Bassey Otu, Chairman of the APC Electoral Committee and Governor of Cross River State.
The results saw Ukachukwu defeat his closest rival, Valentine Ozigbo, who garnered 67 votes. Other contenders included Johnbosco Onunkwo, who received 26 votes, and Edozie Madu, who scored 8 votes. There were 26 invalid votes recorded during the primary, which commenced on Saturday.
In his acceptance speech, Ukachukwu expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for ensuring a smooth and transparent election process. He also thanked the APC National Working Committee, Senator Otu, his fellow contestants, and the delegates for their roles in making the primary a success.
“I call on my fellow contestants to unite and rally around my candidacy. The most important thing now is to deliver Anambra to the APC,” Ukachukwu stated.
The former godfather of Anambra politics reiterated his longstanding influence in the state’s political scene, highlighting his pivotal role in the emergence of previous governors. He added, “I have played the role of a godfather, but now, I am ready to father myself.”
Ukachukwu pledged his commitment to the people of Anambra and party members, vowing not to disappoint them as he prepares to challenge the incumbent, Governor Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
With Ukachukwu now officially flying the APC flag, the stage is set for a fierce contest in the upcoming election, where he will face Governor Soludo of the APGA and George Moughalu of the Labour Party. The 2025 Anambra governorship race promises to be one of the most keenly contested in recent years.
