Ukraine Receives 1,200 Fallen Soldiers’ Bodies from Russia

June 13, 2025

Ukraine has confirmed the receipt of the bodies of 1,200 of its soldiers killed in action, returned by Russian authorities as part of a humanitarian exchange effort amid the ongoing conflict.

The Ukrainian Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War made the announcement on Thursday, stating that the repatriation followed extended negotiations facilitated by international intermediaries and in accordance with the norms of international humanitarian law.

According to officials, the fallen troops will be identified and honoured in line with military protocols. DNA testing and forensic analysis will be carried out to notify families and ensure proper burials.

“This process is essential not only for the dignity of our soldiers but also for the healing of the nation,” said Ihor Klymenko, Ukraine’s Minister of Internal Affairs.

This marks one of the largest single returns of Ukrainian casualties since the full-scale invasion by Russia began in February 2022. Both sides have continued to suffer heavy losses amid a war that shows few signs of immediate resolution.

International agencies including the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) have been involved in brokering exchanges of both prisoners and remains, though efforts are often hindered by political tensions and battlefield dynamics.

The Ukrainian government has reiterated its commitment to recovering all missing and fallen soldiers and called on Russia to honour future agreements swiftly and transparently.
