UN Calls for Investigation After 17 Protesters Killed in Nepal

Kathmandu, Nepal | September 8, 2025

The United Nations has called for an independent investigation following the death of at least 17 protesters in Nepal during violent clashes with security forces.

According to local reports, demonstrators had taken to the streets over growing economic hardship and political discontent when security personnel allegedly opened fire to disperse the crowds. Eyewitnesses claimed that live rounds were used, leading to multiple casualties and dozens of injuries.

In a statement, the UN urged Nepalese authorities to exercise restraint and ensure that the rights of citizens to peaceful protest are protected. It also emphasized the need for accountability, stressing that excessive use of force against civilians is unacceptable.

The Nepalese government has yet to issue a full response but confirmed that an internal review is underway. Human rights groups have joined the UN in demanding justice for the victims, warning that failure to act could further inflame tensions in the country.
