UN Security Council Backs Gaza Famine Report, Labels Crisis ‘Man-Made’ – US Withholds Support

NEW YORK | August 27, 2025

Fourteen of the fifteen members of the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday endorsed the findings of the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), declaring that famine in parts of Gaza is a “man-made crisis.”

The joint statement warned that starvation must not be used as a method of warfare and called for an immediate ceasefire, the release of hostages, and unrestricted humanitarian access to the enclave.

According to the IPC, a U.N.-backed global food security monitor, at least 514,000 people in Gaza are already facing famine conditions, with projections showing the figure could rise to over 640,000 by the end of September without urgent intervention.

Israel rejected the IPC findings, formally requesting that the report be withdrawn and accusing the process of methodological flaws. The United States, the sole Council member not to back the joint statement, questioned aspects of the report’s credibility while acknowledging the severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The Security Council’s action highlights growing international concern over the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza and the urgent need for unimpeded aid delivery.
