The United Nations has raised alarm over the plight of an estimated 55,000 pregnant women in Gaza, warning that they are struggling to access safe childbirth amid the ongoing conflict.
UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, speaking at the UN Headquarters in New York on Wednesday, described the situation as “terrible” and “traumatic,” citing reports from the UN Population Fund (UNFPA). According to the agency, thousands of women face severe complications without immediate access to food, fuel, and medical supplies.
Health facilities in Gaza have been devastated by the war, leaving maternity wards overcrowded or out of service. Aid agencies warn that restrictions on humanitarian access have worsened conditions, putting both mothers and newborns at risk of death.
The UN has renewed its call for safe corridors to deliver critical aid and restore maternity care services, stressing that urgent action is required to prevent further loss of life.
