UNIUYO Medical Lecturers Embark on Strike Over Vice Chancellor Selection Process

Medical lecturers at the University of Uyo (UNIUYO), Akwa Ibom State, have commenced an indefinite strike in protest against the selection process for a new Vice Chancellor.

The lecturers, under the aegis of the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), College of Health Sciences, UNIUYO chapter, announced the industrial action on Monday, citing alleged irregularities and lack of transparency in the ongoing appointment process.

In a statement signed by the chapter chairman, Dr. Uduak Akpan, and secretary, Dr. Iniobong Udofia, the association accused the university’s governing council of sidelining due process and violating extant guidelines in the shortlisting of candidates for the institution’s top leadership position.

“We are deeply concerned that the selection process for the Vice Chancellor has been fraught with inconsistencies and opaque procedures that cast doubt on its credibility,” the statement read. “We believe such disregard for fairness and merit threatens the integrity of the institution and the future of academic excellence.”

The striking lecturers demanded the immediate suspension of the process and a thorough review by relevant regulatory and oversight bodies, including the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Universities Commission (NUC).

The development has sparked concern within the university community, especially as it may affect academic and clinical activities at the teaching hospital attached to the college.

As of press time, the university management has yet to issue an official response to the strike action.

Students and staff are calling for a swift resolution to avoid further disruptions in the academic calendar and healthcare delivery services associated with the institution.
