UNN Council Honors Legacy of Nnamdi Azikiwe with Visit to His Widow

The Governing Council of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), recently paid a courtesy visit to Professor Uche Azikiwe, widow of Nigeria’s first President, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, in recognition of his contributions to the institution and the nation.

During the visit, the Pro-Chancellor of UNN, Kayode Ojo, expressed the university’s appreciation for Azikiwe’s role in founding the institution. He emphasized that the visit was part of efforts to strengthen ties with the family of the late leader and reaffirm the university’s commitment to preserving his legacy.

Professor Azikiwe, in response, welcomed the delegation warmly and expressed gratitude for the historic visit, noting that it was the first time since 1996 that university officials had officially reached out to the family. She encouraged the university leadership to continue honoring past national figures beyond formal events such as convocations, stressing the importance of consistent recognition.

In an appreciation letter to Ojo, she commended his initiative, describing him as the first Pro-Chancellor of UNN to pay such a visit since her husband’s passing. She prayed for his success and urged the university to uphold the values that Nnamdi Azikiwe stood for.

Ojo, who led the delegation, noted that the visit aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which seeks to advance education and scholarship in Nigeria. He praised Azikiwe’s vision, stating that his influence extended beyond politics and played a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s educational landscape.

The visit marks a renewed relationship between UNN and the Azikiwe family, reinforcing the university’s commitment to honoring its founding father’s contributions.
