President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on Nigerian social media influencers to channel their platforms toward nation-building and responsible communication rather than spreading content that could undermine national unity and peace.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ engagement in Abuja, the President emphasized the growing impact of digital platforms in shaping public opinion and influencing national discourse. He urged content creators, digital activists, and online opinion leaders to uphold integrity, promote truth, and avoid fanning the flames of misinformation and division.
“Social media is a powerful tool, one that can build or break. I urge every Nigerian influencer to use that power to build our country, not to tear it down,” Tinubu stated.
He acknowledged the important role the digital space plays in holding leaders accountable and advocating for social change but stressed that freedom of expression must be balanced with responsibility, patriotism, and adherence to factual reporting.
President Tinubu also warned against the rising tide of fake news, hate speech, and unverified commentary that has, in some cases, caused unrest and confusion among the populace. He called for a new era of constructive engagement where influencers become catalysts for national development, peace, and informed dialogue.
The President’s appeal comes amid government efforts to regulate digital content, combat cyberbullying, and protect public interest in the rapidly evolving information ecosystem.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to safeguarding the rights of all Nigerians to free speech but cautioned that national security, social harmony, and economic stability must not be sacrificed in the name of digital activism.
As Nigeria continues to face economic and security challenges, Tinubu’s message serves as a rallying call to online personalities to become partners in progress by using their platforms for enlightenment, positive mobilization, and unity.
