Vice President Shettima Arrives in São Tomé for Nation’s 50th Independence Anniversary

Vice President Kashim Shettima, accompanied by his wife, Hajiya Nana Shettima, has arrived in São Tomé, the capital of the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe, to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the country’s 50th National Independence Day celebration.

Shettima departed Abuja on Saturday, July 12, 2025, to attend the Golden Jubilee festivities alongside other African leaders and global dignitaries. His presence underscores Nigeria’s longstanding diplomatic ties and regional cooperation with the Central African island nation.

The visit also highlights Nigeria’s commitment to fostering stronger bilateral relations, particularly in joint development initiatives within the Gulf of Guinea, where both nations co-manage resources through the Nigeria–São Tomé and Príncipe Joint Development Authority.

The Vice President is expected to participate in key commemorative events and return to Nigeria at the conclusion of the independence celebrations.
