Abuja, July 11, 2025 — Vice President Kashim Shettima will depart Abuja on Saturday, July 12, for the capital city of São Tomé, the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe, to represent President Bola Tinubu at the country’s 50th National Independence Day celebrations.
In a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha, it was disclosed that Shettima will join other leaders from across Africa and beyond at the grand finale of activities marking the Golden Jubilee of the Central African island nation’s independence.
Nigeria and São Tomé and Príncipe have long enjoyed a strong bilateral relationship, with a focus on joint resource development in the Gulf of Guinea. This partnership is formalized through the Nigeria-São Tomé and Príncipe Joint Development Authority, which manages the Joint Development Zone.
Nigeria has been actively involved in supporting São Tomé and Príncipe through various means, including technical aid, donations, and critical support during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Vice President is expected to return to Nigeria after concluding his engagement in São Tomé.
