Victor Olunloyo: A Legacy of Excellence That Defies Comparison

Former Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister has paid glowing tribute to the late Victor Omololu Sowemimo Olunloyo, describing his legacy as one that is almost impossible to surpass. Olunloyo, a former governor of Oyo State and an accomplished mathematician, passed away on April 5, 2025, at the age of 90, leaving behind a trail of achievements that continue to inspire Nigerians across generations.

Born in Ibadan on April 14, 1935, Olunloyo was not only a political figure but also an intellectual powerhouse. His academic journey led him to earn a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of St Andrews in Scotland in 1961, where he specialized in eigenvalue problems. His contributions to number theory and applied mathematics remain celebrated in academic circles worldwide. Upon his return to Nigeria, Olunloyo lectured at esteemed institutions such as the University College Ibadan and the University of Ife, solidifying his reputation as a scholar of repute.

Olunloyo’s foray into politics began with his appointment as Commissioner for Economic Development for the Western Region at the age of 27. Over the years, he held several key positions, including Commissioner for Education and Community Development. His brief tenure as governor of Oyo State in 1983 was marked by significant reforms and bold decisions before being cut short by a military coup led by General Muhammadu Buhari.

The ex-FCT minister highlighted Olunloyo’s ability to seamlessly merge intellectual brilliance with practical governance. As Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs, he oversaw the coronation of prominent monarchs like Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III and King Oyewunmi, demonstrating his commitment to preserving Nigeria’s cultural heritage. His political career saw him navigate various parties, including the National Party of Nigeria (NPN), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), showcasing his adaptability and dedication to public service.

Beyond politics, Olunloyo chaired investigative panels on infrastructural failures and played pivotal roles in PDP committees aimed at electoral success in Oyo State. Despite controversies surrounding some reports he authored, his unwavering principles earned him respect across political divides.
