Visa Hurdles Threaten Expanding $1bn Nigeria–Vietnam Trade, Envoy Warns

August 27, 2025 — Nigeria’s growing trade relations with Vietnam, valued at over $1 billion, may face serious setbacks if visa restrictions and bureaucratic bottlenecks are not addressed, Vietnam’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Luong Quoc Thinh, has cautioned.

Speaking at a trade forum in Abuja, the envoy noted that while economic ties between both countries have grown significantly in recent years — particularly in agriculture, textiles, telecommunications, and oil and gas — challenges in visa processing continue to hinder smooth business exchanges and investment flow.

Ambassador Thinh stressed that reducing visa barriers would enhance bilateral trade, encourage direct investments, and promote cultural exchanges between Nigeria and Vietnam. He added that easing travel procedures for entrepreneurs and professionals is critical to unlocking new opportunities across sectors.

Nigeria’s Ministry of Trade and Investment acknowledged the concerns, assuring that discussions are ongoing to streamline visa policies and strengthen diplomatic ties.

Trade experts say Nigeria’s growing economic diversification agenda aligns with Vietnam’s interest in Africa, and both countries stand to gain from improved cooperation if current obstacles are swiftly resolved.
