The management of the Voice of Nigeria (VON) has formally apologised to its subscribers and the wider public following the incorrect publication of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2024 final result on its official website on the night of Saturday, 26th July 2025. The erroneous report inaccurately declared Nigeria’s defeat against Morocco before the match had concluded, causing confusion and disappointment among fans.
In a statement released by VON’s Director General, Jibrin Baba Ndace, the organisation described the premature announcement as both regrettable and misleading. He praised the Nigerian Super Falcons for their remarkable resilience and historic victory, noting that the team staged an inspiring comeback to beat host nation Morocco 3–2. This win secured Nigeria’s record-extending tenth WAFCON title and further cemented the Super Falcons’ dominance in African women’s football.
Ndace revealed that initial investigations attribute the false report to an internal error but did not rule out the possibility of external interference, including a potential security breach or hacking incident aimed at compromising VON’s editorial systems. The agency is currently conducting a thorough probe to ascertain the exact cause of this breach.
To prevent recurrence, the Director General highlighted ongoing internal reforms, including strategic staff redeployments aimed at strengthening accountability, improving editorial oversight, and enhancing operational resilience across all VON platforms.
This candid apology by VON reflects the agency’s commitment to maintaining accurate, reliable news dissemination while safeguarding the integrity of its information channels as Nigeria celebrates yet another proud moment in its sporting history.
