Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo (SAN), has assured the public that the Federal Government is actively addressing all existing challenges in the country’s aviation sector, with a commitment to restoring safety, efficiency, and investor confidence.
Speaking during a stakeholders’ engagement in Abuja, Keyamo noted that the ministry is not unaware of the long-standing issues affecting the sector — from infrastructure deficits and airline sustainability problems to regulatory bottlenecks and operational inefficiencies. However, he affirmed that the Tinubu administration has taken strategic steps to resolve them holistically.
“We are not sweeping anything under the carpet. Every challenge in the aviation sector is being confronted frontally and methodically,” the minister said. “Our airports are undergoing phased upgrades, regulatory agencies are being repositioned, and we are creating a framework that encourages private sector investment without compromising national interest.”
Keyamo revealed that part of the reform agenda includes the implementation of public-private partnerships (PPPs) for airport concessioning, enhancement of air navigation services, review of bilateral air service agreements (BASAs), and improving conditions for local carriers to operate viably.
He also assured passengers and industry players that issues such as flight delays, safety concerns, and high operating costs are being addressed through a mix of policy changes, stakeholder collaboration, and infrastructural improvements. “This is not just about fixing problems — it’s about building a sustainable aviation future for Nigeria,” he added.
The Minister further stressed the need to align Nigeria’s aviation growth with international standards, promising to ensure that Nigeria does not lag behind in the fast-evolving global aerospace industry.
His remarks come at a time when the aviation sector is under growing scrutiny due to recent passenger complaints and airline disruptions. However, Keyamo maintained that under his leadership, the aviation ministry is prioritising transparency, efficiency, and the safety of both domestic and international travelers.
With renewed focus and support from the Federal Government, stakeholders remain cautiously optimistic that the sector may yet witness a long-awaited transformation.
