Abuja, Nigeria – August 15, 2025

The Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has held a strategic meeting with the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, in Abuja to map out pathways for boosting Nigeria’s trade competitiveness and economic growth.

The closed-door talks, hosted at the CBN headquarters, brought together senior officials from both institutions. Discussions centred on enhancing Nigeria’s global trade presence, improving export competitiveness, and advancing policies that could attract sustained foreign investment. Sources revealed that the agenda also touched on foreign exchange stability, trade finance reforms, and aligning monetary policy with long-term growth objectives.

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala applauded the CBN’s ongoing efforts to stabilise the naira and foster a business-friendly climate, urging closer synergy between trade and monetary policy to strengthen Nigeria’s foothold in international markets.

Governor Cardoso reiterated the apex bank’s resolve to drive investor confidence and support the federal government’s economic diversification push. Both leaders agreed to explore structured frameworks for long-term cooperation between the WTO and Nigeria’s monetary authorities, aimed at achieving inclusive and sustainable development.
