Lagos, July 18, 2025 —
The Lagos State Government, in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), has renewed calls for deeper investment in youth development and empowerment as part of the activities marking the 2025 World Population Day.
Themed “Harnessing the Power of the Youth: Pathway to Prosperity”, the event held in Lagos brought together policymakers, development partners, civil society groups, and young people to address challenges facing Nigerian youth, particularly in areas of education, health, employment, and reproductive rights.
Speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget, Mrs. Abiola Liadi, emphasized the critical role of youth in shaping the state’s future. She reiterated the commitment of the Sanwo-Olu-led administration to creating inclusive policies that promote access to quality education, skills acquisition, and youth-friendly health services.
“The youth population is a vital asset, not a burden. With the right investments, we can turn demographic trends into economic dividends,” Mrs. Liadi stated.
In her remarks, UNFPA Representative in Nigeria, Ms. Ulla Mueller, underscored the importance of youth participation in national development and decision-making processes. She noted that equipping young people with knowledge and opportunities was essential to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially those related to gender equality, health, and economic growth.
Ms. Mueller called for multi-sectoral partnerships to address pressing issues such as teenage pregnancy, gender-based violence, and youth unemployment, stressing that “empowered youth are the engine of sustainable development.”
Young participants at the event shared testimonies and showcased innovations inspired by youth-focused initiatives supported by the state and international agencies.
The celebration concluded with a joint declaration reaffirming the state and UNFPA’s shared commitment to fostering a society where young people are respected, protected, and empowered to reach their full potential.
