Zamfara Gov Clears ₦13.9 Billion Gratuity Debt Owed Retirees Since 2011

Abuja, July 9, 2025

Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal has announced that his administration has settled a backlog of ₦13,944,039,204.64 in gratuities owed to retirees between 2011 and 2023.

Governor Lawal made the disclosure at the Government House in Gusau on Tuesday while receiving a report from the joint committees overseeing the payment of outstanding gratuities. The payout covered 3,824 state service retirees, who received ₦7,960,162,598.64, and 4,833 local government retirees, who shared ₦5,983,876,606.

He described the clearance as a fulfillment of his administration’s commitment to prioritise civil servants who had waited years for their entitlements, some even passing away before receiving their payments. He stated that the initiative has restored confidence and dignity to retired public workers.

In the same ceremony, Governor Lawal inaugurated the Contributory Pension Implementation Committee, tasked with overhauling the state’s pension law, coordinating with the Ministry of Justice, the State Pension Commission, and integrating ICT tools through ZITDA in preparation for transitioning to a fully contributory pension scheme.
