Abuja, Nigeria — August 14, 2025 | The Federal Government has announced an urgent ₦3.6 trillion rehabilitation plan for the 3rd Mainland Bridge in Lagos after structural investigations uncovered alarming underwater damage threatening its integrity.
Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, disclosed the findings on Tuesday, warning that the deterioration beneath the bridge’s structure poses serious risks to the safety of millions of daily commuters. He stressed that swift and comprehensive intervention is essential to prevent further damage and ensure the bridge’s long-term viability.
Umahi explained that the Ministry of Works is finalising a phased repair strategy designed to address the structural defects while minimising traffic disruption. The project aims to restore the bridge’s stability, extend its lifespan, and secure its role as a critical economic and social lifeline for Lagos.
Commissioned in 1990, the 3rd Mainland Bridge remains one of Nigeria’s busiest transport corridors, linking Lagos Island to the mainland and facilitating a massive flow of goods and people across the commercial capital.
