2027 Presidency Should Be Zoned to the South — Amaechi Advocates Equity

Port Harcourt, Nigeria – July, 2025 — Former Minister of Transportation and senior member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, has called for the presidency to be zoned to the southern region of Nigeria in the upcoming 2027 general elections, stressing the importance of fairness, equity, and national unity.

Amaechi, who made the statement during an interaction with journalists in Port Harcourt, emphasized that power rotation is a critical element in maintaining balance in Nigeria’s diverse political landscape.

“The South has shown unwavering support for the current government, and for the sake of unity and stability, the next president should come from the southern region,” he said.

He further warned that neglecting the unwritten zoning arrangement could deepen regional dissatisfaction and fuel political tension across the country.

While he did not declare personal ambition for the presidency, Amaechi urged political parties, especially the APC, to consider the principles of inclusiveness and national cohesion in determining their 2027 presidential candidates.

His remarks have stirred conversations within political circles, especially as early political maneuverings begin to shape the landscape ahead of the 2027 polls.
