239 Teachers Denied Salaries Over Absenteeism in Jigawa

Dutse, Nigeria – June 15, 2025

The Jigawa State Government has withheld the salaries of 239 teachers across various schools in the state following findings of persistent absenteeism and dereliction of duty.

The Executive Chairman of the Jigawa State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Prof. Haruna Musa, made this known during a press briefing in Dutse on Friday. According to him, the affected teachers were identified during a routine monitoring and evaluation exercise carried out by the board across the 27 local government areas of the state.

Prof. Musa stated that the disciplinary action became necessary in order to restore accountability and efficiency within the education sector, stressing that public education must not be compromised by negligence or lack of commitment.

“These teachers were found to have abandoned their duty posts without formal leave or explanation, thereby depriving pupils of quality education. The Board has decided to withhold their salaries pending further investigations and possible sanctions,” he said.

The SUBEB boss further revealed that school heads and supervisors who failed to report the truancy of staff under their watch would also be queried, warning that the government would not condone indiscipline in the system.

Jigawa State has been implementing reforms aimed at improving basic education, including teacher retraining, school renovation, and stricter enforcement of attendance.
