A 73-year-old resident, Alhaji Sanusi Akande, has demonstrated civic responsibility by casting his vote during the Lagos local government elections held on Saturday, July 12, 2025.
Akande, who voted at Ward 06 in Lagos Island, arrived at the polling unit early and commended the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) for the orderly and peaceful conduct of the electoral process. Speaking to journalists after voting, he expressed satisfaction with the arrangements and urged other residents, particularly the youth, to actively engage in grassroots governance.
“I have voted in every election since 1999. It’s my civic duty, and I believe that choosing the right leaders at the local government level is essential for improving basic services like health, education, and sanitation,” he stated.
The polling unit saw a gradual increase in voter turnout as the morning progressed, with electoral officials and security personnel ensuring a smooth and secure environment.
LASIEC had earlier assured the public of a transparent and credible election across all 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the state.
Akande’s participation served as a reminder of the significance of local government elections and the critical role older citizens continue to play in Nigeria’s democratic process.
