As the Lagos State local government elections got underway on Saturday, many residents took advantage of the restriction of vehicular movement to transform major roads and streets into makeshift football pitches.
Across various neighborhoods, particularly in Surulere, Mushin, Ikeja, and parts of the Mainland, young people and even adults were seen engaging in spirited football matches on otherwise busy roads. With minimal traffic and reduced public activity due to the movement restrictions imposed by security agencies, the streets provided ample space for recreation.
The restriction, which commenced at 6:00 am and is expected to last until 3:00 pm, was put in place to ensure the smooth and safe conduct of the elections. However, with polling units in some areas witnessing delayed commencement and low voter turnout early in the day, residents sought alternative ways to pass time.
Some local observers expressed concern that the atmosphere of leisure might reflect public apathy toward the electoral process, while others viewed it as a creative and harmless use of the day’s enforced calm.
Security operatives patrolled the streets intermittently, ensuring that public order was maintained. Electoral officials under the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) continued to carry out accreditation and voting across the local government areas.
