Hypocrisy in Islam: A Spiritual Disease

By Kafayat Oyewo-Oyelere

Hypocrisy, is a deeply condemned trait in Islam. It refers to a disconnect between a person’s inner belief and outward expression.

Pretending to be a believer while concealing disbelief or harboring ill intentions. It can also be described as feigning to be what one is not or A behavior that contradicts what one claims to believe or feel. The Qur’an and Hadith emphasize its severity, warning that hypocrisy is not just a moral flaw, but a spiritual disease that can lead to the lowest depths of Hell.Understanding its signs, causes, and remedies is essential for every Muslim striving for sincerity in faith and action.

Hypocrisy in the Qur’an

The Qur’an addresses hypocrisy in numerous verses, especially in early Madinan surahs when the Muslim community began facing social and political challenges. Allah exposes the dual nature of hypocrites and the danger they pose to the Muslim Ummah. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says:”And of the people are some who say, ‘We believe in Allah and the Last Day,” but they are not believers.

They [think to] deceive Allah and those who believe, but they deceive not except themselves and perceive [it] not.”(Qur’an 2:8-9)Similarly, in Surah Al-Munafiqun, Allah exposes the deceit of hypocrites:”When the hypocrites come to you, [O Muhammad], they say, ‘We testify that you are the Messenger of Allah.’ And Allah knows that you are His Messenger, and Allah testifies that the hypocrites are liars.”(Qur’an 63:1)The most frightening verse is from Surah An-Nisa:”Indeed, the hypocrites will be in the lowest depths of the Fire and never will you find for them a helper.”(Qur’an 4:145)These verses reveal the severity of hypocrisy, not just as a character flaw, but as a path to destruction in the Hereafter.

Types of Hypocrisy

Scholars differentiate between two main types of hypocrisy:

1. Nifaq I’tiqadi (Hypocrisy in Belief): This is the most dangerous form. It includes pretending to be Muslim while harboring disbelief. This type is considered outright kufr (disbelief) and will lead to eternal punishment unless repented from before death.

2. Nifaq ‘Amali (Hypocrisy in Action): This refers to behavioral traits of hypocrisy without disbelief in the heart. It includes lying, breaking promises, and betrayal. While this does not expel one from Islam, it is a serious sin that must be addressed.

Signs of a Hypocrite

(From Hadith)The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) described the signs of a hypocrite in multiple hadiths.

In one narration: The signs of a hypocrite are three: when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a promise, he breaks it; and when he is entrusted, he betrays the trust.”(Sahih al-Bukhari 33; Sahih Muslim 59)These traits highlight that hypocrisy can exist even in those who appear religious outwardly. Thus, a believer must constantly evaluate their character and actions.

Causes of Hypocrisy

Hypocrisy doesn’t arise out of nowhere; it often stems from deeper spiritual issues,

🕳️Desire for worldly gain: Some pretend to be religious to gain status, money, or influence.

🕳️Fear of persecution: During the Prophet’s time, some claimed faith to avoid backlash from the Muslim community.

🕳️Envy and malice: Discontent with others’ success can breed resentment and deceit.

🕳️Popularity/Game/Friendship: Trying to be friends with people, or gaining popularity causes humans to wear different colours.

🕳️Disease of the heart; some hypocrites can’t identify a particular reason, it’s like a problem they also wish to solve.

Consequences of Hypocrisy

The dangers of hypocrisy are severe, both in this world and the Hereafter:

🕳️Spiritual ruin: Hypocrites deceive themselves and fail to build a real connection with Allah.

🕳️Loss of trust: Hypocrisy erodes social bonds and undermines community trust.

🕳️Punishment in the Hereafter: As mentioned in Surah An-Nisa, the hypocrites will be in the “lowest depths” of Hell, a place reserved for the most corrupt souls.

How to Avoid Hypocrisy

Islam provides several practical steps to avoid falling into hypocrisy:

1. Strengthen Faith: Engage in regular acts of worship with sincerity, and deepen understanding of the Qur’an and Sunnah.

2. Self-Evaluation (Muhasaba): Regularly reflect on one’s intentions and actions to ensure they align with Islamic teachings.

3. Truthfulness: Be honest in speech, promises, and trust key areas mentioned in the hadith.

4. Avoid Riya (Showing Off): Do good deeds for Allah’s sake, not for praise or recognition.

5. Be in a gathering of people who fear Allah.

6. Make Du’a for Sincerity: The Prophet (peace be upon him) often prayed for a heart free of hypocrisy:”O Allah, purify my heart from hypocrisy, my deeds from showing off…”Finally,Hypocrisy is one of the most dangerous spiritual diseases a person can suffer from.

Its signs can be subtle, and its roots often lie in a weak heart. But through sincere faith, constant self-reflection, and striving to be truthful in word and deed, a believer can protect themselves. May Allah keep our hearts firm on faith, sincere in actions, and far from the darkness of hypocrisy.”O Allah, I seek refuge in You from associating anything with You knowingly, and I seek Your forgiveness for that which I do unknowingly.”(Hadith – Ahmad)
