The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has handed over 474,000 tablets of Tramadol to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) as part of intensified efforts to curb the influx of illicit pharmaceutical products into the country.
The handover ceremony, which took place at the Customs headquarters, was presided over by top officials from both agencies. The intercepted consignment, reportedly smuggled in from a neighboring country, was seized during a routine patrol by vigilant Customs officers.
Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, said the seizure underscores the Service’s commitment to national health and safety, noting that the abuse of Tramadol poses a grave danger to public health, particularly among Nigerian youth.
He added, “This handover demonstrates our resolve to collaborate with sister agencies in the fight against drug abuse and smuggling. We will not relent in securing our borders against those who threaten the wellbeing of our citizens.”
Receiving the drugs, NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, commended the Customs for their vigilance and partnership. She reiterated the agency’s readiness to destroy the illicit drugs and continue its public health advocacy against drug abuse.
This development marks another milestone in the ongoing inter-agency collaboration aimed at sanitizing Nigeria’s pharmaceutical supply chain and protecting public health.
