FG Declares July 15 Public Holiday in Honour of Late President Muhammadu Buhari

The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as a public holiday to honour the memory of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday, July 13, in a London hospital at the age of 82.

The announcement was made in a statement issued by the Ministry of Interior on Monday morning, confirming the suspension of official government activities nationwide on the designated date. The government said the decision reflects a mark of deep national respect for the late President’s legacy of service, sacrifice, and leadership.

According to the statement, the public holiday will allow Nigerians across the country to observe the day with solemnity and reflection, in recognition of Buhari’s decades-long contribution to Nigeria’s political and military development.

“This declaration is not only a gesture of honour but also a moment for the nation to come together in unity to remember a man whose life was defined by discipline, commitment to public service, and unshakable patriotism,” the statement read.

The Federal Government also encouraged citizens to offer prayers for the peaceful repose of the former leader, whose burial is scheduled for the same day, in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, by 2:00 p.m. after his remains arrive from London by midday.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in his earlier condolence message, described Buhari as a “towering figure in Nigeria’s history” and called on Nigerians to emulate his values of integrity and devotion to national unity.

With the declaration, federal institutions, offices, and schools are expected to remain closed on Tuesday, as the nation pays its final respects to the late elder statesman.
