Premier League champions Manchester City have officially opened discussions with Burnley over the possibility of bringing back England U21 goalkeeper James Trafford, who previously rose through the ranks at the Etihad before making a permanent switch to Turf Moor.
Trafford, who joined Burnley in the summer of 2023 for a reported fee of around £15 million, could be on his way back to Manchester just one season after leaving, following interest from City’s technical team. The 21-year-old, widely regarded as one of England’s most promising young shot-stoppers, made a strong impression despite Burnley’s struggles during their top-flight campaign.
Sources close to the negotiations indicate that City have made an initial inquiry and are keen to explore terms that would facilitate Trafford’s return, possibly involving a buy-back clause that was inserted during his sale to Burnley. Pep Guardiola’s side is believed to be assessing future goalkeeping options, particularly with growing uncertainty around the long-term plans for current backup options behind first-choice keeper Ederson.
Trafford’s performances for England at youth level, including his heroics during the UEFA European Under-21 Championship—where he was pivotal in helping England lift the trophy without conceding a single goal—have only increased his stock. His development, confidence with the ball at his feet, and reflex saves have drawn praise from both pundits and coaching staff across the league.
Although Burnley were relegated at the end of the 2024–2025 season, Trafford was one of the few bright spots in their campaign, and the club may be reluctant to let him leave without securing a favourable deal. However, Manchester City’s interest signals serious intent, as the club looks to deepen its squad depth ahead of another demanding season on multiple fronts.
As of now, talks are at an early stage, but developments are expected in the coming days as City look to finalise transfer plans before the close of the summer window.
